WATER INNOVATION EUROPE 2022

What is the role of water in the net-zero society?

In Water Europe, we believe in leadership, collaboration, and results, cultivating a culture within the innovative water sector distinguished for its visionary, inclusive, and impactful spirit. We want to hear about your solutions, your expertise during this day on the role of water in a net-zero society.

In too many conferences, we have been flooded with data, overwatered with facts on the importance of water only leading to a Colorado effect: a river which does not reach the sea anymore. All of us need to stand up for the real value of water and build a Water-Smart Society.

  • It means a society in which the true value of water is recognized and realized;
  • all available water sources are managed in such a way that water scarcity and pollution of water resources are avoided;
  • water and resource loops are largely closed to foster a circular economy and optimal resource efficiency;
  • the water system is resilient against the impact of climate change events;
  • and all relevant stakeholders are involved in the governance of our water system.

During the last months, the European institutions pursue to roll out the green carpet for a low carbon and digitalized economy: Healthy soils strategy, Fitfor55, the Next Generation programme.

However, what is the role of water when we emerge from the carbon tunnel? Will the green carpet turn blue? It will be too late.

Three key legislations are currently under revision in our common house:

đŸ”čHow can water head a new industrial emissions directive which steers Europe to a strategic autonomy in a net-zero society?

đŸ”čHow can water turn the urban wastewater management into a resource for local stakeholders with multiple benefits in a net-zero society?

đŸ”čHow can water – from the pick of our mountains to our costal lines, navigating across the diversity of our wetlands – provide healthy bath hotspots for the benefit of our net-zero society?

Finally, thinking that whatever happens outside Europe will have no impact inside Europe is a tale. We are not in a closed society. The European Union – by the voice of the Commissioner for neighborhood and enlargement, OlivĂ©r VĂĄrhelyi, – affirms its support to one of our partner to combat climate change through the achievement of a Water-Smart Society. How so can we outline a water-smart diplomacy of a net-zero carbon Europe?

Let's write together a new page of Water Europe's story and head towards a water-smart net-zero carbon society.

Naomi Timmer
Naomi Timmer is director of H2O-People and its' Flagship Programme the European Junior Water Programme. Naomi have been active for almost 10 years in the water management sector as a programme manager for several personal development programmes in the Dutch water sector. Since 2019 she is creator and director of the European Junior Water Programme to share the knowledge and enthusiasm of a holistic leadership approach within an European context.
Manon Berge (EJWP participant at EJWP - European Junior Water Programme)
Manon Berge
I am a sociologist working in water management for a small French company named ACTeon. My work is quite diverse: designing stakeholder engagement processes for a variety of projects, facilitating these interactions, helping local authorities to understand water governance and how to implement their strategy, studying how people perceive environmental resources, climate change
 and how these perceptions determine their actions.  I travelled quite a lot during my university years, enjoying snowy winters from Moscow to Montreal! I live now in Grenoble, where the proximity of mountains allows nice hikes in nature.  My main motivation to join the European Junior Water Programme is to discover new ways of working  both in an international and interdisciplinary context.
Borko Radivojevic (EJWP - European Junior Water Programme)
Borko Radivojevic
Hi, my name is Borko, I am 25 years old and live in Nis, the third biggest city in Serbia. I grew up in an engineering family and work with my father in our small company for consulting and projecting. My field of interests are river engineering, hydraulic computations, flood risk and environmental sciences. I am also doing PhD studies in parallel, working on Deep Learning and how to implement it into a flood risk analysis. I participate in EJWP to create an international connections and increase my knowledge about water related topics. Lastly, in my spare time I play basketball, practice martial arts and enjoy in nature.
Benjamin Hermans (Proces engineer at De Watergroep)
Benjamin Hermans
Hi, my name is Benjamin. I am 28 years old and live in Diest, a small city in Belgium. I work for De Watergroep as a process engineer. I design and optimize the drinking water treatment. In addition, I conduct the necessary research for complex designs. Besides the technical aspect, cooperation with internal and external stakeholders plays a huge factor in my job. This is also the reason I got into the EWJP. In order to create an international network and build up the knowledge to tackle international water related challenges together. Finally, to end on a personal note, I love sports. In my spare time I go rock climbing, skiing or wakeboarding depending on the weather.
Merel Mostert (EJWP - European Junior Water Programme)
Merel Mostert
Hi all, my name is Merel, I am 28 years old and live in Naaldwijk, a small village in The Netherlands. I studied European Studies, my bachelor in The Hague and my Master at Ghent University, in Belgium. I work for the Delfland Water Authority, which is focused on the maintenance of dikes and dams; water management and water quality. Here I work as a tender advisor/purchase advisor. This means, all the purchases Delfland makes (all governmental institutions), are bound to certain rules. I advise my colleagues how to purchase (at national or European level) and assist them in the tender procedure.  My experience during my studies and work are my motivation for joining this program and to support the European ideas and politics! The EJWP program is a boost for the cross-border cooperation. Lastly, in my free time, I love to play hockey, go kitesurfing or waterskiing, just whenever I can!
Andres Lucht Uribe (Water Engineer at DECHEMA e.V.)
Andres Lucht Uribe
Hi, I am Andres, born in Nicaragua and living in Freiburg-Germany. After my studies in Environmental Engineering and Process technologies for water treatment I dedicated myself towards Data Sciences and Digitization of Processes. I got a broad work experience in Science and Engineering and started my self-employment this year. My vision is to understand the anthropogenic water cycle with a technological and geo-political perspective. Therefor I continue my studies within the EJWP. Professionally I am dedicated into analytical sensors for Grey- and Green Infrastructure and the information chain till data-driven decision-making. Among Water and Tech I love to spend time with my sisters and family and found a new passion in mountain cycling.
Lander Wantens (Natuurpunt)
Lander Wantens
Lander has a BSc in environmental awareness, and wrote his thesis on fish migration on the Flemish waterways. At Natuurpunt, Lander is working on the Wetlands4Cities project, with the aim of developing at least  five urban wetlands in Flanders over the next two years. He is also involved in the Curieuzeneuzen project, a citizen science research initiative to measure heat and drought, in cooperation with the University of Antwerp. “I believe that networking within the vibrant and diverse EJWP community, including the recognized experts on European water issues, will further improve my skills and knowledge for water research, and in passing on the importance of water resources management to younger generations,” said Mirela. “I am looking forward to seeing how different countries and organizations are working on their specific water issues, and to exchanging knowledge and expertise. The EU policy is also especially interesting, as we will be working with EJWP colleagues from around Europe with different backgrounds,” said Lander.
Dimitris Kofinas (Associate Researcher at UTH - University of Thessaly)
